Finding the social in social media

There seems to be one consensus with the people in the class I am taking – very few people are 100% comfortable with social media. We know that is where all the action is, but we don’t seem to be really sure we want to be there. I am no different. I was on Facebook briefly, do have a LinkedIn profile but only for work, and I just signed up for Twitter this week.  That is the sum total of my social media experience. And after watching too many documentaries about social media ruining people’s lives, I’m a little afraid of it.

But I also recognize that social media is a significant part of the marketing landscape.  Refusing to use it would be like refusing to use a computer – sure I could, but what would be the point?  A better strategy is to fill the gap in my skill set with real knowledge and expertise.  So I’m taking a few calming breaths, and a big cup of coffee, and wading in.

At least I know I’m not alone!
